Last night, I was reading this week’s edition of Entertainment Weekly. Within the News and Notes section,
there was an article addressed as “Are the Skinny Starlets of ‘90210’ Setting a Bad Example?” The
article discusses the fact that the stars of 90210 are way too skinny. They are trying to compete with the racy show
Gossip Girl in the weight division, but who is really getting hurt between these battles? The main stars of these two
shows are known for their body image, but are the health of these women to lose so much weight worth it. Also, what image is it putting on teenage girls. Entertainment Weekly states, “The CW, on
the other hand, celebrates the fact that 90210 hammers every other network on Tuesday
nights in the category of females who watch television and are between the ages of 12-34. Besides, weight-related pressure
is trickling down to the youngest of girls: The National Eating Disorder Association cites data from the 1990s in which 42
percent of girls in grades 1-3 reported a desire to be thinner” (Svetkey 13). These two shows alone are increasing the
pursuit for young females to feel pressured to lose weight and feel uncomfortable with their body images. Some of these girls
are looking to have the “perfect” body at a very young age. These are just two shows in which television evokes
poor self esteem into young females’ lives.
